A direct flight between the Maldives and Australia marks a significant milestone years in the making. Preparations for the inaugural route between Velana International Airport (MLE) and Melbourne (MEL) on 17 May 2026 were discussed during a meeting between the High Commissioner, MD Ibrahim Iyas, and the leadership team of Maldivian. The new connection is expected to strengthen tourism, trade, and people-to-people links between the two countries.

Police teams in Malé and Hulhumalé have successfully recovered a total of MVR 619,048 in connection with reported theft and robbery cases. Between April 15 and April 21, 2026, Malé Police recovered MVR 335,338 with support from the Galolhu, Henveiru, and Maafannu policing teams, while Hulhumalé Phase 1 and Phase 2 teams recovered MVR 283,710, underscoring ongoing efforts to strengthen public safety and law enforcement response.
