On the first observance of the International Day for Small Island Developing States, the Maldives reflects on its longstanding leadership in advancing the interests of Alliance of Small Island States and other Small Island Developing States. The Malé Declaration of 1989 helped catalyze the formation of AOSIS, marking the beginning of coordinated global advocacy on climate change. Since then, the Maldives has played a leading role on the international stage, including during its AOSIS Chairmanship from 2015 to 2018, contributing to landmark agreements such as the 2030 Agenda and the Paris Agreement.
