Minister of Housing, Land and Urban Development Dr Ali Haidar Ahmed has stated that the 20-year National Development Masterplan will play a pivotal role in developing the Maldives to meet the needs of residents. He made the statement speaking in the ceremony held to accept the Government of Australia’s contribution to the Masterplan.  

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced the launch of a 20-year National Development Masterplan on September 17. The President stated that the master plan provides a comprehensive framework for the Maldives' long-term development, incorporating citizens' voices and decisions. He also mentioned that it was the vision and strategic plan for the national development of 2025-2045. 
 
The Government of Australia has donated a total of USD 609,597 to support the Maldives in creating the Masterplan. The agreement on the donation was signed by Minister Dr Haidar and High Commissioner of Australia to the Maldives David Jessup. 
 
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Dr Haidar expressed his sincere appreciation to the government of Australia for its significant contribution to this transformative developmental initiative. Meanwhile, Ambassador David Jessup revealed Australia's unwavering commitment to support the Maldives, particularly in essential situations. Highlighting that environmental issues are one of Australia's and the Maldives' mutual concerns, the ambassador expressing interest in assisting the Maldives in its efforts to mitigate these challenges. He also disclosed that Australia will share its experience with the Maldives when drafting the master plan. 
 
The 20-year master plan will be drafted after conducting several comprehensive studies. Relevant information will be collected from all Maldives islands separately, with unique plans designated to incorporate national-level decisions in specific fields. The government aims to complete the drafting of the master plan within a year, with legal backing provided by a specially designed law. The President's Office will draft the plan with the Ministry of Housing, Land and Urban Development, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and other relevant authorities. 

Two companies have been awarded contracts to develop 560 rooms as part of the Integrated Tourism Development Project in Hankede, Addu City. The agreements were finalised during the Future Hospitality Summit held in Dubai. 
 
The Hankede Tourism Project is overseen by the Maldives Fund Management Corporation, with the China National Electric Engineering Company (CNEEC) leading the development of the tourism infrastructure. 
 
The signed agreements involve two key companies collaborating with the Fund Management Corporation. The first agreement was made with Conduit House from the UK, represented by CEO Jonathan Healy, while Managing Director Ahmed Nazim signed on behalf of the Fund Management Corporation. Conduit House will develop 335 rooms, comprising grand, deluxe, and boutique hotels. 

The second agreement was signed with Time Hotel, based in the United Arab Emirates. CEO Mohamed Awadalla represented Time Hotel, with Managing Director Ahmed Nazim signing for the Fund Management Corporation again. Time Hotel will be responsible for developing a 150-room grand hotel and a 75-room deluxe hotel in Hankede. 

The government has announced that the Hankede tourism project will consist of 1,041 rooms, offering 2,082 beds. This initiative will feature diverse accommodations, including two grand hotels, two deluxe hotels, ten boutique hotels, 64 serviced apartments, and seven beach villas. 

Maldives and Saudi Arabia have signed an agreement to collaborate to enhance and support the sports sector. The deal was signed by Minister of Sports, Fitness and Recreation Abdulla Rafiu and Saudi Arabia's Minister of Sport Abdulaziz bin Turki bin Faisal in a special ceremony held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. 
 
Under the agreement, sports associations and institutions from both countries will be trained. It will also facilitate sports teams from both countries to visit each other, enhance direct communication between clubs, teach sports medicine and anti-doping, and organise competitions and sports events. Additionally, Maldives and Saudi Arabia will contribute collective efforts to invest in the sports industry, exchanging documents, training equipment, and sports-related experiences. 
 
Saudi Arabia had previously assisted in developing the Maldives' sports industry, with national teams, and clubs, have completing training camps in Saudi Arabia. 

The Ministry of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy, Finance, and the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) have signed a tripartite agreement to lease land in Hulhumale' to construct a waste transfer station. 
 
The agreement was signed by Minister of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim, Minister of State for Finance Ahmed Mazin, and Managing Director of HDC Ibrahim Fazul Rasheed. The initiative is part of the Waste Management Improvement and Waste-to-Energy Project, supported by the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB). As part of the project, HDC will lease one hectare of land for the waste transfer station to enhance waste management in Hulhumale'. 
 
At the signing ceremony, Minister Thoriq highlighted that the previous government failed to establish a safe waste management system in Hulhumale', despite allocated budgets. He emphasised that the current administration prioritises this issue, with plans to implement a modern waste management system. He noted that one hectare of land has been allocated with the assistance of HDC, and construction of the waste transfer station will begin soon. 
 
Meanwhile, Fazul remarked that Hulhumale' has yet to see the implementation of an ideal waste management system. He said that a significant amount of waste has been transported from Hulhumale' to Thilafushi over the past nine months, mainly due to the lack of adequate facilities at the Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO). 
 
The Ministry said that the construction of the Hulhumale' waste transfer station is a key part of the government's broader efforts to establish sustainable waste management across the country. With an estimated cost of USD 13 million, the project is expected to complete its design phase within 18 months. 

The inaugural vessel to utilise the Uthuru Maritime Service (UMS) docked with the oil tanker "JIAN JIE" on October 3. The Panamanian ship en route from Abu Dhabi, UAE, to China accessed various services introduced under the UMS. 
 
Upon arrival, the crew disembarked in Uligan, Haa Alif Atoll, to attend the newly developed Seaman's Rest Area opening ceremony on the island. The local community warmly greeted them, who showcased cultural activities, including traditional boduberu performances. The ceremony was attended by several notable figures, including Mohamed Wajeeh, CEO of Maldives Ports Limited (MPL), Parliamentarian Ali Moosa, and Ahmed Muaz Mohamed, President of the Uligan Island Council. 
 
The Seaman's Rest Area provides a space for crew members of vessels entering through the International Ship and Port Security (ISPS) gate to relax and engage in recreational activities. The "JIAN JIE" captain, who participated in the ceremony, expressed that he had "never experienced such complete hospitality" in his two decades of sailing. 
 
During its stay, the vessel requested UMS services for crew changes, water supply, waste disposal, and some spare parts. It is expected to remain in the area for approximately five days to conduct maintenance work. As part of the crew change, nine crew members will be disembarked, while six new crew members will arrive in the Maldives and board the ship. 
 
In addition to MPL, several private companies will also contribute to providing services to the vessels. The UMS initiative, launched by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s government, aims to bolster the Maldivian economy and enhance benefits from the maritime sector. 
 
MPL CEO Wajeeh noted that the ship's presence will create additional business opportunities for residents during its stay in the atoll. A dedicated UMS website has also been launched to centralise information on customer convenience services. 

Every year on October 4, the Maldives observes Broadcasting Day to acknowledge broadcasters' critical role in nation-building, fostering democracy, and enhancing public awareness. The Maldives has a rich broadcasting history, with radio services officially launching on December 29, 1962. Initially, these services were limited to specific regions, but today, advancements in technology enable round-the-clock radio coverage across the nation. 
 
This year marks the 62nd anniversary of broadcasting in the Maldives, which expanded to television services on March 29, 1978, with the debut of TV Maldives. While private entities have long been permitted to publish newspapers and magazines, broadcasting was initially reserved for government control. This changed in 2006, marking a significant milestone in our broadcasting history, when the government opened the sector to private broadcasters, with licenses first issued in July 2007. This shift has brought about a diversity of voices and perspectives in our media landscape. 
 
Today, various organisations provide TV and radio broadcasting services alongside rebroadcasting options. The Maldives Broadcasting Commission has issued 35 broadcasting licenses, including 31 for television, 4 for radio, and two for nationwide rebroadcasting. 
 
Broadcasting has been instrumental in informing and educating the public for over six decades, overcoming significant technical challenges in reaching all islands. Before the digital age, the Maldives faced hurdles in disseminating information, yet TV and radio remained essential sources of news and entertainment for remote communities. 
 
In our current digital landscape, while information is readily accessible online, broadcasting is vital for delivering news about global events, health issues, and other significant matters. It is a crucial tool for informing and entertaining the diverse populations spread across the Maldives. 
 
The broadcasting industry is continually evolving, with new initiatives on the horizon. The Maldives Broadcasting Commission is preparing to launch community broadcasting services promoting local interests without political agendas or financial motives. These initiatives are a testament to our commitment to inclusivity and diversity in the media. A special permit has already been granted for community broadcasting to Dhuvaafaru Primary School in Raa Atoll, and the Commission reports success with this pilot project. 
 
The Maldives is progressing toward aligning with leading global standards in broadcasting, utilising advanced technology to enhance its broadcasting sector. 

Minister of Homeland Security and Technology has announced new regulations concerning the Employment of Foreigners in the Maldives, targeting the issue of undocumented migrants. The Ministry confirmed that these regulations will take effect on October 6, with user guides outlining the changes available on the Expat system homepage.

The new rules specify the procedures to be followed when undocumented migrants are reported missing and the associated fees and penalties. USD 64.9 will be charged for each request regarding a missing undocumented migrant. Additionally, if a work permit holder who is employed goes missing due to employer negligence, a fee of USD 129.70 will be charged. Decisions have also been made to charge a fee of USD 648.5 as a work permit for a missing withdrawal services fee if such a request is cancelled.

Furthermore, the Ministry also announced that if a foreign employee is reported as missing, employer can withdraw the request through the Expat system from October 6th and until the 30th of this month. Any requests withdrawn after this period will have to pay a fee of USD 648.5. The exact amount will also be charged if a request is withdrawn after seven days after reporting.

The government has introduced several measures to ensure that immigrants reside in the Maldives per the law. As such, Maldives Immigration and other relevant authorities have been conducting operations aiming to achieve this goal.

Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen has disclosed that over 300 vehicles have been relocated to a designated area in Hulhumale’ for unregistered vehicles, pending updates to the registry. During a signing ceremony with the Housing Development Corporation (HDC), he proposed constructing 15 parking buildings in Hulhumale’. 
 
Minister Ameen acknowledged ongoing efforts to address congestion in Male’ City, although he noted that visible progress has yet to be seen due to the severity of the issue. He highlighted that many vehicle owners are now working to comply with regulations, marking a crucial step in educating drivers about road traffic laws. The Ministry estimates that over 1,200 four-wheelers are still illegally registered in the city. 
 
Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation signed with HDC to allocate land for the temporary parking of unregistered vehicles in Male’ and Hulhumale’ until the registry and other relevant issues are amended in August. The land was allocated from Hulhumale’ Phase Two, adjacent to the MACL flats. The agreement notes that the vehicles will be given six months to be registered by the rules. If the vehicles are not going to be reregistered to the Male’ zone, they should be moved to the zones they are registered in, within this time frame. 
 
The land can only be used for temporarily parking unregistered vehicles parked on the roads and vehicles registered for zones other than Zone A. The Ministry noted that the unregistered vehicles will be given 40 days to be moved to the parking area. It warned that those vehicles not transferred to the parking area within that time frame would be towed by the police. 

Minister of Dhivehi Language, Culture, and Heritage Adam Naseer Ibrahim has underscored the foundation of life for the citizens of Maldives, which is rooted in the sacred religion of Islam. He made the remarks during an official gathering commemorating the day the Maldives embraced Islam. 
 
Speaking at the event, Minister Adam Naseer highlighted the most significant transformative event in Maldivian history, which was the nation’s conversion to Islam. He said that this momentous day marked a turning point in the lives of the Maldivian citizens, bringing about profound positive changes. He also described the conversion as a great blessing and fortune for the country. 
 
Additionally, Minister Adam Naseer stressed that Islam remains the most crucial aspect of the lives of the Maldivian people. He noted that the Dhivehi language spoken by Maldivians contains many terms deeply connected to the religion and shared insights into the customs of Maldivian ancestors and their Islamic ties. He also emphasised that the highest truths, actions, and fundamental values in the lives of the Maldivian people are all rooted in Islam. 
 
The Maldives converted to Islam 800 years ago. The 2nd of Rabi'ul Aakhir marks the anniversary of this event, which is celebrated annually. It was first observed as the official day of conversion in 1374 AH, and the celebrations continued for 14 years before pausing. Since 1421 AH, the country has resumed celebrating this historic day. 

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stressed that intellectual development must be regarded as equally important to nation-building as infrastructure and housing. He made this remark during his address to the nation on Saturday, commemorating the day the Maldives embraced Islam. 

In his speech, which coincided with Teacher's Day, President Dr Muizzu also addressed the country’s educators, acknowledging their pivotal role in shaping future generations. He emphasised the need for teachers to instil values such as humanity, discipline, and responsibility in students. 

The President called on teachers to nurture young Maldivians with a solid national identity and ethics rooted in Maldivian culture. He underscored the importance of fostering a generation that values hard work, accountability, and responsibility. 

However, the President noted that this responsibility extends beyond educators, urging all citizens to play their part in shaping the nation’s future. He highlighted that moral growth begins with personal responsibility, referencing the Holy Quranic teaching that change starts from within. 

President Dr Muizzu referenced his previous address in February, where he outlined his administration’s philosophy: developing the nation’s people alongside its physical infrastructure, reaffirming his commitment to intellectual development as a pillar of national progress. 

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has emphasised that empowerment of the nation’s youth requires a proper understanding of Islam and Maldivian identity in a way that resonates with their mindset. During a morning ceremony at Dharubaaruge, he made these remarks to commemorate the day the Maldives embraced Islam. 

The President stressed the importance of conveying the facts of Maldivian history and the country's enduring independence in a manner that young people can quickly grasp. He added that Islamic values and Maldivian national identity must be woven into everyday life to achieve this goal entirely. 

Furthermore, the President highlighted the need to ensure that every young person, regardless of gender, is equipped to advocate for the nation and contribute to its development. He underscored the importance of nurturing the moral and spiritual well-being of the younger generation. 

In his address, the President outlined three key points: the representation of Muslims in Islam and the Holy Quran, un-Islamic practices in contemporary Maldivian society, and how we should align our actions to reform these issues. 

The Maldives commemorates the day it embraced Islam annually on the 2nd day of Rabi'ul Akhir. 

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has called on all parties to actively participate in transforming Maldivian society into one guided by the principles of the Qur'an and Sunnah. He made this statement during his address at the official ceremony marking the Day the Maldives Embraced Islam, held this morning at Dharubaaruge.

In his speech, the President urged the people to remain steadfast in their adherence to Islam—their intentions, words, and actions. He noted that the conversion of the Maldivian people to Islam was driven by the peace and security that Islam brings. He further explained that at the time of the nation's conversion, the Maldives was under attack and persecution by a regional power.

Reflecting on the day's significance, President Dr Muizzu emphasised the importance of learning from the noble moral virtues brought to the world by the Prophet Muhammad (SAW). He also reminded the people that the Sunnah instructs them not to spread falsehoods or insults and to speak only good and truthful words.

First Lady Madam Sajidha Mohamed accompanied the President at the ceremony. Other state and government officials were also in attendance.

During the event, President Dr Muizzu presented medals, prizes, and certificates to Hafizs who had earned their Hafiz certification.

President His Excellency Dr Mohamed Muizzu will embark on a state visit to India from October 6th to 10th, 2024, following an official invitation extended by the President of India, Her Excellency Droupadi Murmu. 
 
During his visit, President Dr Muizzu is scheduled to hold high-level meetings with President Murmu, Prime Minister His Excellency Narendra Modi, and other senior officials of the Indian government. Discussions will focus on strengthening bilateral cooperation and further enhancing the longstanding relationship between the two nations. 
 
Previously, President Dr Muizzu met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the COP28 summit in Dubai on December 1st, 2023. Additionally, the President attended the swearing-in ceremony of Prime Minister Modi and the Council of Ministers at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi on June 9th, 2024. 
 
The President will be accompanied by a high-level delegation from the Maldives, with the Government of India extending full hospitality during their visit. 
 
President Dr Muizzu remains committed to enhancing bilateral ties with nations that play a crucial role in the development and growth of the Maldives, ensuring a dynamic and proactive foreign policy for the country. 

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has inaugurated the newly renovated Aasaharaa Mosque and Funeral House in Malé City, a project he initiated during his tenure as Malé City Mayor. The ceremony, followed by Friday prayers led by the President, took place at the mosque on Friday. 

The renovation addressed long-standing issues of inadequate space and facilities, particularly for people with special needs, women and the numerous visitors to the cemetery. 

The Aasaharaa Mosque has been transformed into a two-story structure with full air-conditioning, including the waiting area. The Funeral House now provides three spacious, purpose-built areas for preparing the deceased.

Other improvements include a ground-floor prayer area for those with limited mobility, separate toilets for people with special needs and children, and gender-segregated facilities for the public. The redesign also incorporates outdoor seating, enhanced waiting areas, a widened cemetery entrance and designated motorcycle parking.

These enhancements create a more accommodating and accessible environment for all users. Following the inauguration and Friday prayers, President Dr Muizzu toured the renovated facilities, including the mosque, funeral house and the new waiting areas. 

This redevelopment project embodied the President's vision to provide a dignified and spacious setting for citizens using the cemetery services. 

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu underscored the crucial role of the Maldives' broadcasting industry in representing and advocating for the nation and its people.

The Maldives celebrates National Broadcasting Day annually on October 4, a testament to the industry's recognition and importance.

This year’s theme for the day is “Visions of Tomorrow: Shaping the Future of Broadcasting.” 

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has extended his heartfelt condolences to the family of Late Abdul Majeed Mahir. In a post on his official 'X' account, the President described the late Abdul Majeed Mahir as a respected, caring, and honourable citizen of the Maldives and a friend whose loss he deeply feels, having shared many personal moments with him. 

In his social media post, the President expressed deep sadness upon learning of the passing of Abdul Majid Mahir. 

The Late Abdul Majeed Mahir, who served as president of the Municipal Council and held prominent roles in several government departments, was a respected figure. President Muizzu, like many others, deeply admired his dedication and contributions. He was not only a Maldivian traditional medicine expert but also a cherished father who ensured that today's generation remained connected to the history and traditions of the Maldives. 

President Dr Muizzu sought solace for the bereaved family during this difficult time and expressed his hope that they would find strength and healing in the coming days. The President concluded his message by praying to Almighty Allah (SWT) to grant the Late Abdul Majeed Mahir's soul eternal peace in Jannah.

President Dr Muizzu, in his messages to the President and Chancellor, underscored the profound significance of German Unity Day. He reiterated warm greetings on this jubilant occasion, emphasizing that the day embodies the spirit of unity and resilience that has shaped Germany. He extended his personal best wishes for President Steinmeier and Chancellor Scholz's good health and well-being and the continued progress and prosperity of the people of Germany.
